Beware the owl in the moon. Hopping mice (species of Notomys) are adorable rodents that inhabit the drier parts of Australia. Several of the larger species of hopping mice became extinct after the arrival of Europeans. In more than one case the loss of the species was so rapid that the only remaining traces of them is their bones, collected under the roosts of owls.
